Curatorial Opportunity with NURTUREart’s Education Program

NURTUREart is seeking a practicing curator to lead the high school students of Project Curate during the 2015-2016 school year.

Part of NURTUREart’s Education Program, Project Curate gives high school students the opportunity to understand and experience contemporary curatorial practices by working closely with a professional curator throughout the year. The program culminates with an exhibition at NURTUREart Gallery. Students learn the entire curatorial process – from experiencing contemporary art firsthand, to conceptualizing a curatorial theme, selecting artwork, writing a curatorial statement, art handling, exhibition design and installation, writing a press release, event promotion, and organizing a successful opening reception. It is an opportunity for students to connect with their artistic community while building critical thinking, responsibility, and career readiness skills for future arts engagement and success.

Project Curate needs a passionate leader to creatively engage and inspire a group of lively / bored teenagers. The curator leads weekly meetings with a group of high school students (10th-12th grade) teaching and guiding the students through the process of curating a group exhibition. The lead curator may also organize opportunities for the students to meet arts professionals through visits to galleries, museums and artist studios.

Applicants must have demonstrated knowledge of contemporary art and recent curatorial experience. In addition, applicants must have experience working with youth in an educational setting and be comfortable planning lessons, activities, and writing assignments appropriate for the group. Applicants must have strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively with classroom teachers, gallery staff, as well as their students.

This is a paid opportunity.
