HOW TO SUBMIT A CURATORIAL PROPOSAL TO NURTUREart:

NURTUREart wants to be as helpful and supportive of emerging curators as possible. If you have an idea for an exhibition, please don't hesitate to contact us to discuss your idea well in advance of the deadline and learn how to prepare a solid proposal. The gallery director is NOT on the selection jury, so do not hesitate to seek advice or clarity.

What We Insist: (Rules)

  • Proposals must contain a minimum of six artists.

  • Half of the artists involved in the exhibition must be included in the NANP Artist Registry. This registry is for emerging artists and is free and easy to join.

  • Curators are not allowed to include their own artwork as part of the proposal.

  • Potential artists must be contacted by curators prior to submission of proposal to confirm that they are in fact interested and/or available for exhibition.

  • 50% of proposed artists live or work in New York City.

  • Artists that have exhibited with NURTUREart must wait one year before exhibiting again. Once you have developed your proposal, check the list of the previous year's artists to ensure you don't include one (this list is provided below).

  • Similarly, curators that have exhibited with NURTUREart before must wait one year before submitting another proposal.

What We Prefer: (Guidelines)

While we accept submissions based on all sorts of ideas, we are especially committed to exhibiting work described below. However, these are just guidelines, so don't worry if your project doesn't satisfy everything listed.

  • The work of "emerging" and "under-represented" artists, particularly those in the NURTUREart Artists Registry.

  • Projects from emerging curators.

  • Work that contributes to ongoing dialogue about contemporary art practices.

  • Projects which push the concept of "curator" in new and interesting directions.

  • Thematics not well represented by commercial spaces or otherwise difficult to show elsewhere.

  • Work of artists not previously exhibited at NURTUREart.

  • Our shipping budget is limited – please consider this when selecting artists and work.

How to Submit: (Format)

All material must be submitted electronically on a CD-Rom, and MUST be in the format described below. Email WILL NOT be accepted. The CD should contain the following:

  • One folder called "Images", containing 2 to 4 images from each artist. These images should be JPGS no larger than 1024 x 768, 72 dpi, preferably under 500k. They MUST also be named in the format "01artist_name.jpg", "02artist_name", etc.

  • One to two page statement describing the concept of the exhibition. Please submit digitally in PDF, RTF or Word format.

  • Image list, providing an inventory of the images included in your "images" folder. Include number, artist name, title, year, medium and dimensions. Again, use PDF, RTF or Word.

  • Resume(s) of the curator(s).

  • Folder called "Artist Resumes", including digital versions of each of the artists' resumes.
