NURTUREart’s exhibition program is the unique result of our Artist Registry and Curatorial Program. Every year NANP issues an open call for proposals from emerging curators. These proposals are required to include a significant percentage (50%) of artists from the NURTUREart Artist Registry, thus guaranteeing that emerging independent curators on an annual basis will view the registry in depth. These curatorial proposals are then reviewed by a rotating panel of experienced curators, arts professionals, and members of the board, who recommend exhibitions for the coming season on the basis of quality of both concept and choice of artwork, freeing the Gallery Director to be available to give impartial assistance and advice to curators as they develop their proposals.
History of the Program:NURTUREart began by mounting juried exhibitions of the artists in the regsitry in donated spaces ranging from the United Nations to empty Lower East Side storefronts, from the corporate lobbies of Citibank and Pfizer to Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University. In 2002 NURTUREart marked the launch of its Emerging Curators’ program and its goals for integrating the mutually beneficial career development of artists and curators. The following year we opened our first gallery at 475 Keap Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The Gallery Program has grown steadily over the course of its short history, to the point where eight shows are now exhibited annually in the professional venue at 910 Grand Street.
